Sophie stars in clash of the league's top two teams

Old Georgians 1s 5
BHHC 1s 3

Megan McCaughan reports: "Brighton's winning streak comes to an end in the South East premier division with a superior Old Georgians team taking the win and remaining top of the league.

Brighton knew they were in for a tough game against the top of the league, who are 31 goals ahead of Brighton. Old Georgians came out hard from the off, scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes.

Brighton's press was not working and Old Georgians were exploiting the gaps with ease. A third goal came from an unfortunate late tackle from Megan McCaughan, for which a penalty flick was awarded and slotted into the bottom left corner. The first half ended 3-0, with Brighton on the back foot for most of the half.

After a re-evaluation of their press at half time, Brighton came out much more organised and started to find their groove. Brighton's efforts came to fruition with a quick break from Dina Finn which resulted in an amazing one-touch goal by Katy Furber.

Old Georgians quickly retaliated with an outstanding open play goal. However, Brighton didn't let their heads drop, they kept the pressure on and a great run into the D from Emily Cook led to a second goal for Brighton.

The final two goals both came from short corners: Old Georgians’ with a deflection on the right post and a well executed slip right and back into the middle from Brighton for Bara to net.

The game finished 3-5. A tough but enjoyable game for Brighton, who were unfortunately outclassed on this occasion. Special shout out to Sophie Benton (GK), who had an outstanding performance, helping to keep Brighton in the game.

MoM: Sophie
DoD: Meg (penalty flick).”

Brighton will hope to get back to winning ways at home to Canterbury on Saturday (noon).

Hailsham 1s 5
BHHC 3s 1

Alex Smart reports: "A game of two halves. The first: a dominant B&H side 1-0 up within 10 minutes and going optimistically into half time at 1-1. The second: a biblical downpour, attempted murder and a flurry of goals for the wrong side.

Our game plan went a little awry with Beth’s injury keeping her on the sideline, the starting lineup in someone’s boot, and 10 players on the pitch for the first five minutes until the subs realised that one of them should actually be playing.

The positives!
1. Learner driver Issy M successfully getting a carload of players to Hailsham despite not giving any of them her address and aborting the first car she got in after failing to find the clutch. “Oh I can’t drive an automatic.”
2. A well stocked first aid kit to deal with nose bleeds and open head wounds.
3. Doctor Juliet on standby at A&E with tea, biscuits and stitches.
4. Jacket potatoes. Amanda was so excited, she took her clothes off. We would have settled for the sausage van in the rain in the car park for teas.

The defensive line of Amanda, Isolda and Hollie with guest appearances from Olivia and Ellen made great interceptions and tackles, continually battling against a high press that pinned us in. By half time Olivia had learnt where to take a 16 after some support (bellowing) from the umpire.

When the midfield triangles linked up, we looked strong going forward, bouncing the ball from Gayle on the left and Alex on the right into Eli and Ellen and onto the wings for speed demons Issy F and Issy M, and super skilful Jo.

Abbie made countless saves; Hailsham were quick to pounce on the rebounds and continually switch up front to defy their markers and find the backboard.

Massive shoutout to soldier Olivia, who was on the receiving end of a particularly brutal stick swing to the head. She just about staggered her way off the pitch following the trail of Ellen’s nose bleed after being barged off the ball.

We all did our best in what became a bit of a sh*t show. Ange disagrees, after pre-scanning the pub table for PoM votes and dismissing most options.

PoM - Soldier Olivia, followed closely by Ellen and Eli.
DoD - Issy ‘where’s the clutch’ Makin."
